The applet works in safari (same imac) and in linux firefox. Reproducible: Always
What version of java do you have?

Can you please start Firefox in safe mode (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe Mode) and check if this fixes your problem?

Please update to java 6 update 21, and then create a fresh profile and test again. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/managing+profiles
