User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4

I received a mail - spam, by the way - where the sender had requested a receipt upon reading. When selecting the message in the inbox, the header of the new message was shown in the details pane, while the message body was from the previously shown mail. At the same time, a dialog was prompting me for whether I wanted to send a receipt to the sender.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

Expected Results:
The program should always show the header and body of the SAME email.

Couldn't reproduce the problem, as the program probably caches information so that I'm not prompted again for sending the receipt.
In the 3.0.x releases, TB prompt an alert to tell you that the sender had requested a receipt and this happens *before* that the message is loaded in the preview pane.

From 3.1 release this "issue" is fixed by bug #151244

Why has it then been ignored that many of the comments on bug #151244 stressed the importance of displaying the message BEFORE the alert? When receiving a message from someone unknown, I would like to read the message before even considering sending any kind of reply or receipt. It could be - and indeed in my case it was - spam.

I don't understand: what has been ignored? (I'm not english language ;-) )

Bug #151244 resolve this issue according to your wishes!

see the preview https://bug151244.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=420602 : from TB 3.1 the message is show *before* that TB ask you to send a receipt to sender because all us we want to read the message before send a recepeit.
Maybe I misunderstood you. The preview looks as if the prompt and the message body are displayed at the same time. That would be fine. It would not be good if I had to accept sending the receipt before seeing the message body.

On next Thunderbird 3.1 it is exactly that ;-)

At this moment I don't know if this patch will be backport also on the Thunderbird 3.0.x branches

It isn't possible to backport that patch (and we wouldn't do as its a change to functionality).
