User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100413 Firefox/3.6.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100413 Firefox/3.6.4
I unlocked my desktop. Firefox, which had been running overnight, informed me that 3.6.4 beta was ready to run, and would I like to restart? I said to do it. Firefox confirmed that I wanted to restart. It shutdown... and did not come back up.
I attempted to run firefox from the command line. I received the following error message:
101% /home/rogers/firefox-3.6.x/firefox -P rogers
Error: Platform version '1.9.2.3' is not compatible with
minVersion >= 1.9.2.4
maxVersion <= 1.9.2.4
102%
Not knowing what to do, I made a tar copy of my firefox installation directory. I then attempted to undo the update by finding all the files in the tree (implied above) with the extension ".moz-backup". For each such file, I moved the base file <xxx> to "<xxx>.bad-update" and the the backup file "<xxx>.moz-backup" to the base file <xxx>.
I restarted Firefox. It told me that an add-on had been updated, asked would I like to restart, and also said that it was downloading 3.6.4 again. After the 3.6.4 download completed, I restarted. This time, Firefox came back up after the restart.
Reproducible: Didn't try
I don't know if this problem is repeatable. I am rating this bug as "critical" because it disabled my use of Firefox until I worked around it; however, I have no idea of others experienced the same problem. Perhaps it was just a weird quirk in my installation.
It would be difficult for me to attempt to reproduce the error.

This report is only useful if you still have a backup of your Firefox application folder (with the update logfiles)
Component: General → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

Before I waded in to restore Firefox, I backed up the folder in which the Firefox distribution resides. I neglected to back up the folder containing my personal profile, an oversight I attribute to a feeling of panic I was experiencing at the prospect of being without Firefox for more than a few minutes...
Do you mean these files?

We've made changes to the way app update works for Firefox 4 and 3.6.17 that should resolve this the vast majority of the time if not all of the time. Resolving as works for me since there has been no activity in quite some time. Craig, if you are still able to reproduce with Firefox 4 or when upgrading from 3.6.17 to 3.6.18 please reopen. If anyone else is able to reproduce this with Firefox 4 or when upgrading from 3.6.17 to 3.6.18 please file a new bug so I can keep the requested files separate. Thanks
