User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100315 Firefox/3.5.9 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4 When checking a misspelled word and trying to exit the spell check window it will stop responding and cause the spell checker and the write function to crash. This happens about 20% of the time and only since upgrading to Ver 3.0.4 Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. open a write window in Thunderbird. 2. Misspell a lot of words (like me) 3. Check spelling of a word, then close the spell checker. Then misspell another word and check it and so on. Actual Results: See above. I do not wait till the end of an email to go back and spell check. I correct misspelled words as they occur. This may be the reason it crashes as I open and close the spell checker more than a couple of times in a long email. Expected Results: Correct my misspellings and not crashes when closing the spell checker. not using any themes Thunderbird is as installed.

(In reply to comment #1) > https://developer.mozilla.org/En/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_for_a_bug_report Larry can you follow those instructions so we know how you crash, if the crash reporter show up go to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad and give us a crash ID.
Keywords: crash
I have not been able to find a crash report for this crash. I have included a merged screen print of the crash, the task manger window, and the Thunderbird crash folder. The way I was and can duplicate it is type a few letters into the compose write window, then let the spell checker correct it with what ever it wants to, It will almost always crash on the third correction. Do each one by itself not all three together. I smudged out my address book it is not a malfunction.

Summary: Spell checker causes Thunderbird to crash → Spell checker causes Thunderbird to hang
I have the same problem plus the spell checker often wants to correct formatting terms in addition t9o the visible text.
do you see this problem when using version 3.1?? iirc, spell was updated

Yes it has happened once on my desktop. I have not been using my laptop so I can not say if it is still happening on it. . It does seem to be a lot better. I'm in the process of upgrading to Windows 7 but am having a lot of problems getting the networking to function. I am still using XP as my prime OS and just put SP3 on so I can still get updates.
I just rechecked it as I did on 2010-04-18 and it still crashes on the 3rd misspelled word.
I was not able to reproduce using v3.1.4. stacktrace still wanted. (comment 4)

I'm sorry but you are not talking to a software engineer. These links give me a 404 error code for the symbols. "The official symbol server URL for Firefox is http://symbols.mozilla.org/firefox and for xulrunner http://symbols.mozilla.org/xulrunner. You cannot visit this URL directly: you must add it to the symbol path of your debugging tool. In the examples below, a local cache directory is used to avoid repeatedly fetching the PDB from the server. Replace C:\Users\bsmedberg\symbols with an appropriate cache directory on your machine." Plus all references are for Fire Fox not Thunderbird. I assume what you want is for Thunderbird. Other links on the site for the Symbols say I'm not authorized on that link. When I went to the nightly build site I get a warning that they may not even boot. I give I'll just live with this problem and continue to use a standalone dictionary.
yeah, that doc needs an update. simply substitute thunderbird everywhere you see firefox. and the symbols URL is not meant to be directly accessed in the browser
do you also hang in safe mode?
Have not tried it in safe mode. Upgraded to window 7 and it also does it in Windows 7.
Thunderbird/3.1.7 hangs every time when in compose you do a spellcheck, pick a replacement word and click on Replace. If you do ignore, etc it does not hang. Thunderbird goes into high CPU utilization, becomes not responding and never comes back.
Thunderbird 6.0 still has this behavior. After experimentation, getting the spell check window to close requires the user to click close twice before it actually closes. If you don't click the second time it sits waiting forever or until you use task manager to shut down Thunderbird.
