While investigating bug 539717 I thought of a couple of things app update could do to better handle a background download failure. Currently it writes "null" to the update.status file and prior to 3.6 and with the patch in bug 539717 app update just remove the update files / cleans up the active update xml. I think app update should keep a count of these failures. If the update is successful it should reset the count and if the count passes a specific threshold (e.g. 10) it should display the update ui with a link to download the latest version.
This has already been implemented.
