In bug 560802, cfx xpi produced an XPI that broke the XPI's harness. There was no indication that the XPI was broken except for the facts that 1) the user-facing functionality provided by the extension wasn't visible, and 2) an error and traceback were printed to the text console. That error was helpful, but unless you'd run Firefox from the command line you wouldn't have seen it.

Developers usually look for errors in the error console, so harness errors should at least be emitted there too.

The Add-on SDK is no longer a Mozilla Labs experiment and has become a big enough project to warrant its own Bugzilla product, so the "Add-on SDK" product has been created for it, and I am moving its bugs to that product.
