URLs ? Do you already tried http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode because such things are often caused by addons.

got same problem on Version - 3.6.8 Basically Firefox is not releasing memory from closed tabs I think and after not restarting Firefox for few days I got memory usage to 800MB or more [max was 1.5GB] this is because I'm opening lot of web pages in new tabs to read later but when I close them Memory usage is still high. Tested on Windows XP and Windows 7 both with addons and without. Can do some more testing and send screen shots as I'm heavy Firefox user ;]

Happens on macs too
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0b7) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0b7 Opened about 70 tabs, firefox occupied about 450mb of ram. Then closing tabs one by one firefox kept on releasing the memory slowly Checked with Firefox 3.6.12

Reporter, does this still happen with Firefox 3.6.13 or later, the latest plugins (etc. flash, java, adobe reader 10, etc) and a fresh profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles
Version: unspecified → 3.6 Branch
I use "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110614 Firefox/3.6.18" with latest flash-plugin. When I used a gamesite made in flash and other sites, the used memory sometimes rises above 1GB. Even when the site is closed, FF don't release the memory. When I close FF it takes about 5-10 minutes until FF is removed from memory. Only in the last seconds FF releases the memory down to 151MB and quit.

Langet, can you please update to Firefox 5 or later. If you still see the issue, then please create a fresh profile and test there. If you still see the issue with a fresh profile , create a new bug report.
