The system time on cruncher keeps going astray. As of this writing, the clock is 4 minutes in the future. Restarting the vmware guest tools fixes it temporarily, but then it starts gaining time again.
* tried rebooting the machine but that didn't help * checked other linux machines on bm-vmware05, so the clock on the host is very likely fine * found 'Timekeeping best practices for Linux guests' in VMWare knowledge base http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006427 * cruncher is RHEL 5.4, running kernel 2.6.18-164.10.1.el5, so I removed the 'clocksource=pit' from the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst * now up for 15 minutes with stable clock Interesting things on that doc * no mention at all of 'clock=pit' for CentOS5 (our build VMs) * they recommend using ntp as the best clock sync method, which I think is the opposite to what we thought they used to advise
Still stable so we can probably call this fixed. The only concern I have is if we take updates to the OS then whatever writes menu.lst will put the clocksource=pit back in there.
Time is stable.
