Go to edit/preferences. Set any preference. The one I did was "warn me about
cookies". Close the pane. Then return to edit/preferences. The preference is
no longer set. Also no preference file is being written out.

This is a regression -- it was working about three days ago.

Yes it was working 3 days ago. And I'm pretty sure I didn't break it.
Investigating now.

I did this and it works. (Apart from the crash closing the prefs window - that's
a different bug, currently assigned to danm).

The prefs file is written out, and the checkbox remains checked on a subsequent
launch.
