This report is about all recent versions of Java Plugin2, including
the ones that come with Apple's most recent Developer Previews (Java
for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7 build 9M3150 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6
Update 2 build 10M3050).

All browsers that I tested are effected (Minefield, Firefox 3.6.X,
Safari).

Here are two examples of Java applets that use automated text
scrolling. Unfortunately these examples are in pages that contain
multiple applets, which means that you may encounter bug 563768
(depending on which browser you use).

1) http://securitywizardry.com/radar.htm

(The two applets, above one another, on the left of the page.)

2) http://brittnysseafood.com/

(The large applet at the bottom of the page.)

If you load these applets using a recent version of Java Plugin2,
you'll notice that their text scrolls much more choppily (and perhaps
more slowly) than with the Java Embedding Plugin or the WebKit's
JavaPluginCocoa.bundle.

Could this be related to/be the same as bug 628923? As you know, I encounter choppiness of the whole Java applet in that bug.
Could be. I'll know better when I try to reproduce bug 628923 myself.
Closing old bugs in the Plugins component. We aren't going to track issues in 3rd-party plugins in the Mozilla bug tracker. In addition, support for NPAPI plugins will be removed at the end of this year; for more details see the post at https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/

If there is a serious bug in Firefox, it needs to be filed in the "Core" product, "Plug-Ins" component.
