User-Agent:       Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100423 Lightning/1.0b2pre Thunderbird/3.0.4 ThunderBrowse/3.2.8.1

In my organization there's an LDAP working. I'm creating a list, start typing the name and the autocomplete gives me the matches only for the first. I have to click OK, and open the list dialog again. As side effect, when I click OK, the appended contact is show twice in the main window, but clicking away the list, and click back to it, eliminates the dupe.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. With a working LDAP, do:
2. Create a new list.
3. Type a name of user, select the appropriate match from the autocomplete list.
4. Type another name. There'll be no matches other than those coming from your local contacts.
Actual Results:
Autocomplete stops retrieving contacts from the LDAP.

Expected Results:
All matches, both form local and remote directories, should appear.

Another side effect, which I think is reported bug. This procedure leads to hanging LDAP connections: After closing Thunderbird, it keeps running using loads of CPU and netstat reveals:

tcp        0      0 pavla.local:50961       ucimail6.uci.cu:ldap    ESTABLISHED 2369/thunderbird-bin

tcp        0      0 pavla.local:50960       ucimail6.uci.cu:ldap    ESTABLISHED 2369/thunderbird-bin

tcp        0      0 pavla.local:50962       ucimail6.uci.cu:ldap    ESTABLISHED 2369/thunderbird-bin

I can confirm this on the following as well.

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100802 Thunderbird/3.1.2

Occasionally the failed search will result in this error appearing in the results box:

<LDAP server search problem>

See attachment. Also reported at getsatisfaction.com

<http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/adding_contacts_to_lists_using_ldap_autocomplete>

This is a pretty significant bug in my org. Several folks clamoring to go back to TB2 because of it. This functionality works great in TB2 on PC and Mac.

confirming, but without any error message. Only one search works. If you reopen the mailing list editor UI, you can search once more (sometimes this does not work, too). Both Linux & Windows Versions.

see Bug 609346 - does it sound similar or same as this ML bug?
Summary: When adding several contacts to a list, only the first name is found in the LDAP directory → When adding several contacts to a Mailing List, only the first name searched is found in the LDAP directory - error message "LDAP server search problem"
Version: unspecified → 3.0

It sounds similar, but I've never experienced Bug 609346 in the compose window or in a direct LDAP search in the address book. Problem occurs consistently when editing a Mailing List.

I also have discovered this bug in Mac OS X and really wait for a patch!

I confirm the bug, as described in comment #5, is present on versions 3.1.7 and 8.0 for Windows.

Behaviours:

3.1.7 -> first line ldap is OK, broken on next
8.0 -> first and second line OK, broken on next; sometimes an error message is displayed ("LDAP server search problem") or often just a rectangular box without any message in it

The bug is still there in TB 13.0
I'm really waiting for a patch too...
