it is my opinion that this refactoring effort is both laudable and highly desirable. We should do it.  However, I think that it should not be done for 1.7.  Our symbol names may not be ideal, but today is the code freeze and I don't think that we should refactor our code base just before release.
Perfectly reasonable.  Let's bump this to 1.8 and try to get feedback on the wiki then.
