(Note: this is filed as part of the “Paper Cut” bugs — we assume that there may be multiple existing bugs on this. Please make them block this bug, and we will de-dupe if they are indeed exactly the same. Thanks!) Another one of the "put the users in control of tab behavior": There should be an option to not let a browser open pages in new windows unless people explicitly ask for it. This problem has become rampant lately, with sites like Twitter and Facebook considering themselves so important that all external links from these sites open in new windows (i.e. tabs in Firefox' case). Related preferences we already have for this: - browser.link.open_newwindow - browser.link.open_external Recommendation: - Have an option to disallow windows without specific dimensions (i.e. target="_blank" and its variations) from opening in a new window. - When this setting is on, we should still respect opening links from external apps (mail client, IM) in new tabs — if we don't do that, it's a "data loss" situation, since we're overwriting their current pages. PS: I know there is a bug filed on replacing an existing tab's content when the link is triggered from an external link, e.g. IM client or email client (which shouldn't happen), but I can't find it — if you know where this bug is, please mark this bug as blocking it. :)

This cuts-tabs bug seems to be a dup of bug 565621 (a cuts-controls bug).
Summary: Opening new windows should be user-controllable → Pref to make all links open in the same tab rather than new tab/window (give users control when sites try to open new windows)
