The screen shot contains at least one message showing Chinese. I think other messages do not have MIME charset specified in their headers or incorrectlyt labeled. Please set mail view default character coding to Big5. This makes all non charaset labeled messages to use Big5. If still not working, please set a checkbox below the mail view default. This makes any messages to be treated as Big5.

nhotta@netscape.com, you are right. The messages having problem does not have charset set to big5. Most of them are set to iso-8859-1. I tried setting the default to big5 as you said but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the message list. (trunk build 2000101521)

Please also check the checkbox below the mail default charset and try again.
nhotta@netscape.com: I did check that checkbox and it didn't seem to affect the message list. ji@netscape.com: Yes, I did restart mozilla.
I saw some msgs with big5 header but can be read by setting the charset to GB2312. Need to investigate more.

maybe 'charset override' is not working?? now seems that problem only occurs to messages with header: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 messages that does not have "Content-Type" header displays ok when default is set to big5. a question: if i select BIG5 in menu "View/Character Coding", is it supposed to update the current message in "message list" and "header" pane, too? instead of just update the "message preview" pane?

"View/Character Coding" only applies to the current message, so thread pane message list is not affected. Override checkbox does not work for thread pane, this is a bug, so confirm the bug.

It looks like charset override only fails for those incorrectly labeled msgs.

Changed the summary since this is a generic problem.

Naoki, for msg contents, charset override is not working either if the charset label is wrong.

Tried it again. Charset overriding for msg contents is actually working except that you have to reload the msg after the view default charset is changed. And charset overriding for envelope is not working if the header has a wrong charset label. If the header is not mime encoded at all, then overriding for envelope is working. I'll file a seperate bug for this.

Bug 57086 has filed for the envelope overriding problem.

Reopen because bug 46362 is not exactly a dup of this.
