When the tabs used to open sequentially, it was easy to remember where things were even with a large number of tabs. The new behavior plays scrambled eggs with our memory. Humans are much easy at remembering lists (sequentially ordered things) than ordered trees, which is how the tab bar acts now. I cannot believe somebody thought this was a good idea. If any usability studies were done before making this change (and I doubt it) then they were seriously flawed. Yes, the behavior can be changed back via about:config but that's irrelevant.
