The page in question states that

  var x : hintString ? String : Number

is legal syntax.  It is not, and I believe it's unrepresentable in ABC, except procedurally (ie using '*' and then adding explicit type checks in generated code upon assignment to x).  Also not clear what it would mean in strict mode.  It's sort of like a union type...
