I opened this bug by accident, I was trying to search if one already existed... Anyway, it's here now so I'll write something more.
Thunderbird 3.1 now integrates with Plasma notifications in KDE 4. Unfortunately, when Thunderbird notifies something a notification appears in KDE with the Thunderbird logo but no text on it, so you don't know what the message is saying. A second possibility is that the text is black regardeless to the KDE theme settings and since my theme has a black background it seems that there's no text. I'll let you know this as soon as I can put my hands on my PC.

I can confirm now that there's no text at all. Even with a light background, no text is shown.
This bug is verified fixed with Thunderbird 3.1.1 and KDE 4.4.5
I don't know if the fix is due by the Thunderbird update or the KDE one, but now everything work smoothly.
