The CSS files are ready for doing a patch. As I have no developer tools to do this and Andreas told me to add them here, I'm doing this.

I tried this is action and it looks good, but ran into some issues with the colors in the message preview area and some other places. In general I think it will go well with the other changes I want to do with the windows theme.
Will make a proper patch out of these so others can try it out in action and give feedback, since these there can be issues similar to the message area turning up because of this change.

I don't see this here. Are this strange colors changing when you move the window on the screen, depending what is in the background of TB? If yes, can you try to remove #tabpanelcontainer in messenger.css at 
@media all and (-moz-windows-compositor) {

  #msgcomposeWindow:not(:-moz-lwtheme),
  #tabpanelcontainer {

I had to add this to remove a border showing in tabmail-strip. With this the message preview could be transparent.

Attachment: tabs in firefox using glass

I think we also want to do something about the tabs to make them match what firefox is doing (they look really neat).
Since there are so many things that gets affected here, I wonder if the best approach from both a development and testing point of view is to do this as an addon to begin with (and Richard wouldn't have to grab and compile the whole comm-central shebang). I'll put something together later today and put it in a mercurial repro somewhere.

I added a theme with his own internal name and only the CSS files used by this Bug. This is based on Sharebirds light-weight theme idea which uses the default theme as base. 

I will try to add later the Firefox tabs.

It's only for Shredder (TB3.2) as starting with Gecko 1.9.3 Aero Glass is supported.

Andreas: is this better like this. I can also the button styles for the Message header, but then we have two different button styles.

I added also 1px margin to the bottom of the Addressbook and Composer buttons. They where to low.

Those looks great!
I'm fine with that style of those buttons, but is interested in hearing what other people have to say. Thanks for the great work so far!

I also want to experiment with simple glyph like icons (like Firefox use in combination with the glass style). Will upload a version of the theme that does that as soon as possible.

Another todo item we need to figure out is how to make sure that you can move the window by selecting any part of the glass widget (Firefox does that too).

For a few days still left with the 3.1 to triage bugs ... then step to 3.2 ... still seems wonderful: you're great

I tried this already with:

V 0.3 with Aero tabs. Scrollbutton-up and scrollbutton-down (buttons to scroll tabs in overflow) are now normal toolbar-buttons like in FF. Bottom border from Glass area eliminated. If you see now window color in empty Message pane on startup, this comes from Bug 575615.
Also changed the appearance of the splitters in main Window and Addressbook.
The window drag definition are also in, but still doesn't functions.

Added support for NoGlass and corrected transparency errors in Lightning.

For me this is now complete.

One question is, should we leave the bottom border from the transparency area? In normal 3 pane window and Tasks view (Lightning) I could remove this border. But in Message in tab and Calendar view it's not possible to remove it. Now this border appears and disappears by switching between this tabs.

Included is also a change for the aw-menulist. It makes it more native looking than the old WinNT appearance.

Yes, please file a separate bug for the aw-menulist fix. Easier to keep track of the changes that way.

I just realized that enabling the traditional menubar in Firefox turns the drag-everywhere feature off, so I think this is what happens in Thunderbird too.

I haven't really used Windows Basic theme much, but that looks good and I think it makes sense to do it all across TB when in Basic mode.

If you have win7 and don't like Aero glass you probably have the Basic theme turned on instead.

I quickly tried to install for testing, and failed. I'm not a normal theme installer, so I don't really know what I am doing, but here is where I failed:

- Themes install wants files of type .jar, but this is a .xpi (I asked to install anyway).

- Version is set for min/max of 3.2a1pre, I am on 3.1 (used install anyway from nightly tester tools).

At this point theme failed to install. I see hints in the comments that you only support 3.2? That limits your testers considerably.

I think in the main window the effect looks quite nice, as the menu bar blends together with the tab bar gradient. In the Compose and Address Book windows it doesn't work well at all, it's missing some weight or balance. Or put differently, the menu bar is getting lost...

I like the AeroGlass Alternative look, but I'm getting worried it might break the visual hierarchy and move a bit too many pieces around for being in scope of this bug.

That said, moving it further even one step more into the actual tab could even allow us to address the long standing requests to allow composition in a new tab (menus was always the big show stopper there). That might work better as a new extension to begin with though.

Put the menu bar between the navigation bar and the Tabs follows IE7+8 and also the Explorer in Vista/Win7. IE7 puts this also in XP.

With Bug 581661 the menu bar can auto hide, which also follows IE7+8, Explorer and Firefox.

The menu bar in AeroGlass on dark window colors makes it also hard to read. With AeroGlass Alternative the menu bar is always light blue.

This is because in FF the buttons are always on a light blue background and in TB its the AeroGlass background. I added the light blue background to the buttons to keep the FF appearance.

Aha! I knew I should stop doing reviews in the middle of the night! ;)
It really depends on how much work it is. I think I focused so much on the tabs in that review that I missed to compare them to Firefox with tabs-on-top disabled.
We always have the possibility to fix that after this patch have landed on trunk however.
