User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Thunderbird/3.0.4

right-click a particular important mail, click onto "make sticky". This mail will then stay on-top of the other mails and also have a different color according to the sticky preferences. After having replied to it at some point, one right clicks it again and clicks "un-stick", which will turn it back into a default email (back into default sort order, no color).

Reproducible: Always

Reason: on some days I get so many mails in my different accounts that I cannot always answer them right away, resulting in even important mails scooting down the list too much.

I know that I can mark a message as important etc. and then change the sort order accordingly, but that's a work-around. I would be much more efficient and very very convenient not to mess with sort order.

It looks like Google made this in new mail app Inbox. To bad Thunderbird never implemented it after I reported it to wishlist 6 years ago.

Why is mozilla just passing the buck on this... this bug says duplicate of 503064, if you go to that bug you see...

Duplicate of this bug: 570881, this is a cyclic pass the buck...how about an actual resolution instead!
That's how Bugzilla works. If one bug was marked as a dupe of the other, both bugs are annotated with information about that. You can tell that bug 503064 isn't resolved as a dupe because, well, the status isn't "RESOLVED".

However, if you're hoping for a resolution in terms of a patch for this being landed, I wouldn't hold my breath. There are quite a lot of open bugs in Thunderbird and not a whole lot of developers actively working on it. I'm just trying to clean up some of the backlog of duplicate bugs in this component.
