We currently have the 'devel' module installed on production. This module allows users with administrative access to inspect nodes, blocks, etc at a lower level and generate a list of sql queries used in page content generation. We are certainly taking a performance hit because this is enabled. 

Unfortunately, disabling the module at the moment breaks the site, which suggests that there are other modules (probably custom) that depend on the module. We need to go through and find out what depends on devel, modify it so that it doesn't and eventually disable the devel module.

This has been done. Curiously nothing seemed to break this time. Keep an eye out for rendering oddities / other unexplained bugs.
