When trying to give feedback, I get the error that I need to download a pre-release version of Firefox. I am running current nightly build, so that should be good enough. In general, I'd encourage removing this version sniffing, since I might not be able to start my browser, use a special build that isn't in our list of strings, or similar. I don't see the damage in allowing input from browsers that aren't in the pre-approved list, as long as we capture the version and what browser they are using.
We're actually consciously blocking feedback from any source other than builds on our beta program(s) because that's what the tool is currently intended for. If you'd like to see the logic within the code where this happens, https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=571214 will be a good reference guide. All that said, I'd like to open up feedback from our nightly builds users in the future, but the intention of the data we want hasn't been thought out for that (i.e. are we looking for the same data? if not, what are we looking for?). Do you have any opinions on this, Alex?
Severity: normal → enhancement
Summary: Version detection a bit too aggressive → Allow feedback from Nightly users
Target Milestone: --- → Future
FWIW, I filed bug 576234 to switch the feedback addon on on nightlies. My motivation there was to open up the addon for testing the localization of itself, but I guess localizers may or may not run into this bug when doing so. Not that I have a good suggestion on what we'd want data-wise.
We've enabled this since. Now, Feedback is allowed from everything >= the current known beta version.
