The recent change to hide the bookmarks file with a new profile has resulted in the back icon being squished. See attached screenshot using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.3a6pre) Gecko/20100625 Minefield/3.7a6pre. Happens using 10.6 as well.
STR:
1. Load a new profile on Mac.
2. Observe the Bookmarks toolbar is off by default
3. Observe the back button
The back button returns to shape only if you enable the Bookmarks toolbar.
