Embedded Quicktime player frequently fails to load MP3s. Clearing browser cache solves problem only temporarily. Problem only started with Firefox 3.6.4 and improved slightly with 3.6.6. All plug in are up to date on Windows 7 machine. Quicktime works perfectly with IE8.

Reproducible: Sometimes

1.open page with embedded Quicktime MP3.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Either a white box appears where the player should be or a greyed out white box with Quicktime logo appears.

Usingh default theme.
What version of quicktime do you have? Does this happen in a fresh profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles

I am using Quicktime 7.6.6, I have not changed profiles as the machine is brand new, used only by me and was fine until Firefox 3.6.4.
Please create a new firefox profile and test.

No change, I rolled back to an earlier version and everything worked fine but Firefox then forced me to download and install the 3.6.6 update again and now the Quicktime player only works after clearing the cache. I am very unhappy about this, in particular being forced to update.

Hello again Tyler, I wonder if you have have any more thoughts on the problem. I have just found out I can turn off automatic updates which you could not do in earlier versions, but I don't want to go back to an older version if I can help it.
Many thanks,
Chris

I have just tried creating a new profile and the problem remains exactly the same. It is intermittent, which is very annoying!

Tyler, Idid not understand your last email, but the only thing that caused this problem was installing Firefox update 3.6.4, slightly improved by 3.6.6 I think.
No other changes atall. I have tried everything but no improvement. Do I need to contact anyone else?
Thanks,
Chris
all I did was kick this over to plugins for them to take a look at.

If it helps, I tried disabling the crash protection in about:config and that made no difference, I do hope you can help, I am a very unhappy bunny!

The problem seems to involve the cache, if I Reload the page whilst holding down shift it loads fine....

Well it beat me, pages were slow to load and Quicktime would not load reliably so I was forced to uninstall version 3.6.6. I replaced it with 3.6.3 and everything now works fine. This is not the right answer so please pursue a proper solution.
Thanks
Chris

you should try disabling out of process plugins for QuickTime. please indicate whether that "fixes" the problem.

otherwise, comparative (file) logs from procmon.exe (from sysinternals.com) might be useful.

@Carvells - I have had a similar bug with FF 3.6 - it is still in FF 3.6.15 and
now the new 4.0. Have a look at

bug 643327

or at the following page(s)...

http://sontag.ca/soundboards/Losers2.html

I know this is ancient history now, but any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers
Jim

How is this bug related to bug 643327?

The title for one: Embedded Quicktime player frequently fails to load MP3s

I visited the sample page and they have only one embedded player now. From experience, I can tell you that a single embedded player usually works. It's when there is more than one player object that problems occur.

Carvells rolled back and it worked, but with no definitive answer.

I don't have a definitive answer either, but I just witnessed the exact same behavior between FF 4 Beta 11 and the new release.

Cheers
Jim

What's not clear to me is whether this only affects 0,0-sized plugins (as the other bug), or whether this affects things more generally.
