I installed some software updates tonight on cb-minibinus01, and after the updates finished, they asked to restart. Unfortunately, it seems like cb-minibinus did not come back online from the restart (ssh complains "ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host" and generates "channel 12: open failed: connect failed: No route to host" errors, and pinging from the jumphost reports "Destination Host Unreachable").

Please restart cb-minibinus01. Thanks!
Phong/Jabba will poke this when they're in the Datacenter the next time.

This mini looks like it could be dead. It won't boot at all. It is stuck at the "apple" screen.
Do you have a 10.4 or 10.5 CD to try and boot from, or did you try that and that's where it gets hung up on the Apple logo screen?
We grabbed the mini to take back to the office and I'll try to debug it there tomorrow.

What OS was on there?

Thanks!

10.4.11.
I can't get this mini to boot. I can try re-imaging it or re-installing it with Leopard. Would that be ok to do? Is there anything that needs to be backed up? I can mount the disk and read files from it.

If I can't revive it, do we need to find a replacement for it? Perhaps a first gen Intel mini is available.

Sure.

Not to my knowledge.

Sam and I will have to talk and see what our strategy is if it can't be revived; we had some preliminary discussions a while ago in anticipation of this day coming eventually, but we didn't resolve anything. This was Camino's last PPC machine, and from my perspective, it's important to have a PPC machine among our tinderboxen as long as we still support PPC (though I recognize that's increasingly difficult)….
I'm attempting an "Archive and Install" of Leopard. Will keep you posted about whether it is successful or not.
Good news. The Archive and Install worked. It now has a fresh copy of Leopard installed, it retained the Network and User settings and put the entire old Tiger system in a folder under /Previous Systems . I'll go plug it back in tomorrow morning at MPT.

Is this enough to get you going on it again?

Awesome; thanks, Justin!

I *think* so. As long as the caminobld user is there as an admin user with our usual password, and ssh and VNC are enabled, I should be able take it the rest of the way back.

I presume these are all part of the retained Network and User settings (but I've never done an Archive and Install, so I don't know); I know SSH and VNC are configured in the Sharing pane of System Preferences, not Network, so can you please double-check that those are enabled when you hook it up?
The mini is back online and I enabled ssh and screen sharing.
