When you open the file "Inbox" (home/USERNAME/.thunderbird/YOUR_PROFIL/Mail/Local Folder/) with gedit (or another editor), you can see EVERY mail wich was stored in your inbox. It#'s not neccesary if the mail is permanently deleted or not. Reproducible: Always
yes, you must compact the inbox to remove deleted messages. Thunderbird uses the standard Berkeley mailbox format, and that's the way that format works.
