Hello, I would request a mailing list / newsgroup for Drumbeat related events and organization in Barcelona. Next November a Drumbeat Festival http://www.drumbeat.org/drumbeat_festival_2010 will be held there.
The possible mailing list name could be: community-drumbeat-barcelona
Do we want a Barcelona-specific list, or do we want an events-specific list - i.e. mozilla.drumbeat.events? This could then be reused for future events.

(BTW, new groups are now under mozilla.drumbeat rather than mozilla.community.drumbeat.)

Gerv
Hello Gerv! Is a list for the community helping on organizing the Drumbeat Festival in Barcelona. I was thinking that maybe a better name would be: drumbeat-festival.
Alina: I understand the purpose; I'm just trying to see if we can do this in a way which makes the list live a bit longer than November. A list for all "festivals" would certainly do that, so that's an improvement.

Mark: are we currently planning to call it a "Festival" every year?

Gerv
OK, you're right...probably should name it drumbeat-catalunya then, if we are thinking at the continuity of the list after the "Festival".
Well, I was thinking that the list could continue after the festival and we could use it to organise the following festivals! Or all Drumbeat events - hence the idea of mozilla.drumbeat.events.

If we want one for a regional Drumbeat community (although why split it up that way?) I'd prefer to do things at country-level (e.g. the current community lists for India and the Philippines) rather than regional.

Gerv
Well, the main aim of the list was focusing on local community and organisation for Drumbeat events in Barcelona (this year festival, maybe next one as well, and any other Drumbeat-like events in Barcelona area in the future). So local languages (Catalan, Spanish, etc.), I guess rather than English, will be used. As we have noticed, not all people feel confident enough in an only English communication channel.
I would go for a mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona or a mozilla.drumbeat.events.barcelona if we also think about another extra global one under mozilla.drumbeat.events (I personally think that mozilla.drumbeat could be already enough).

My two cents.

Regardless of my own sensitivities, as a local with good knowledge on the field, I would choose mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona. We can discuss more about it if you feel like.
There's no guarantee, and in fact I think it's unlikely, that next year's Festival will be in Barcelona. I'm sure they'll want to move it around.

Surely, whatever it's called, if it's for coordinating the Drumbeat Festival, it will be an English or a mixed channel? I know Mark and most of the Foundation team don't speak Catalan! (I guess some may have working Spanish, but certainly not all.)

I think we have the following options:

mozilla.drumbeat.festival - general festival organization and chat, gets reused every year to organize the current festival

mozilla.drumbeat.events - general Drumbeat event organization and chat, gets reused regularly to organize events (maybe there are too many events and so this is too general?)

mozilla.drumbeat.events.spain - for all events organized in Spain (a way of subdividing the above, if you think there are going to be a lot of Spanish events)

mozilla.drumbeat.community.spain or mozilla.drumbeat.spain - Spanish speaking Drumbeat community, also used for organizing this year's festival

I don't want to create a group for "barcelona" or even "catalunya" because that seems unnecessarily exclusive of other people living in the area.

This bug and thread comes from a short talk we have Mark Surman, Alina Mierluș and me in Barcelona this last Wednesday after a local meetup with local people who may be interested in the upcoming festival.
Mark, when he has time after a long flight, he can give more details and his own opinion.
For the festival, we will have an international organisation and a local specific one, just because of the linguistic or cultural restrictions we commented, and because we also want local people to join in. So, we can think have a mailing list for each aspect.

I think this is very convenient for international organisation every year.

Several potential local participants would not feel comfortable with this solution, I think you don't need me to explain you why, and I believe we are not interested in raising this kind of issues. Indeed, we want to have diverse people participation from Barcelona area and surroundings.
You have a point that a mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona list might be short-lived after the festival (we hope not) or being a small group in the end.

If hosting a list under this name in Mozilla is a problem, this will be simply done in another Mailman server.
I think we need two newsgroups:

mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona - for local organizing in the catalan language both before and after the festival. Alot of great energy is building in that local community, and we need a place for people to gather.

mozilla.drumbeat.festival - a global english language list for organizing drumbeat festivals (they will always be called festivals).

On a broader point, I believe we want to encourage Drumbeat local organizing at whatever geographical level makes sense for people. So, if there is strong city level activity in Paris, New York, Barcelona, then it makes sense for me to give that community a place to gather online.
Ok, if we agree in the end, Gerv, could you give moderation rights (for the list) of mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona to Alina <alina@mozillafoundation.org>? I think the sooner we can expand the initial local people group the better…
For mozilla.drumbeat.festival, I guess Mark can have this role if he wants to, unless he proposes another person as well apart from him or instead of him.
Toni: I'm sure server-ops will do that :-)

OKed for creation of two groups as outlined in comment 10, with moderators as given in comment 11.

Just wanted to make sure, in comment 10/11, are you specifically asking for "moderator" status as opposed to full administration of the list?
jlazaro: I think so. Whatever's usual :-)

Gerv
I've created the initial lists drumbeat-barcelona with alina@mozillafoundation.org as admin, and drumbeat-festival with mark@mozillafoundation.org as admin on lists.mozilla.org.

I've emailed Giganews for the creation of these newsgroups mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona and mozilla.drumbeat.festival, with a turn-around time of 24-48 hrs. Once these newsgroups are created, the google groups should also appear shortly.
Giganews has created mozilla.drumbeat.festival and mozilla.drumbeat.barcelona, but still waiting on Google to create the appropriate groups. This should hopefully take no longer than 3 business days.
Google groups created, newsgroups have been listed as public
