User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100625 Firefox/3.6.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100608 Thunderbird/3.1
Fresh install of Thunderbird 3.1 (no update).
Same on Windows XP and Linux.
If I create several IMAP accounts and configure them all to NOT "Check for new messages at startup" (Server Settings), this setting is magically turned on for the first (default) account when I quit and restart Thunderbird.
If I now go to the account configuration (Server Settings) again and un-check "Check for new messages at startup" again, this time it's finally remembered on successive starts of Thunderbird.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Freshly install Thunderbird 3.1 (no update).
2. Add your IMAP accounts. For all of them, un-check "Check for new messages at startup" (Server Settings). Gloda and Offline-Sync is also disabled, if that matters. "Check for new messages every 10 minutes" is disabled also. (Basically, Thunderbird should not connect/download anything on its own.) At this time, no login credentials are configured yet.
3. Quit Thunderbird.
4. Start Thunderbird again.
5. Thunderbird asks for login credentials (username, password) for first account created.
6. Cancel operation.
7. Check Server Settings of first (default) account. You'll notice that "Check for new messages at startup" has been magically turned on for that account.
8. Un-check "Check for new messages at startup" again.
9. Quit and restart Thunderbird.
9. The setting is remembered permanently.
Actual Results:
If "Check for new messages at startup" is turned off (non-default) upon initial account creation, it gets automatically re-enabled if you quit & restart Thunderbird.
Expected Results:
If "Check for new messages at startup" is turned off, it should stay disabled and not be turned on again by some internal magic.
Doesn't seem to depend on specific IMAP servers. Tested against several IMAP servers running different software.

I can confirm this bug. It does also happen with POP accounts.
1. Create a New Profile
2. Add POP or IMAP account; uncheck "Check for new messages at startup"
3. Restart Thunderbird
4. (Thunderbird tries to connect to the POP or IMAP server.)
5. Open "Account Settings" ("Tools -> Account Settings" or "Edit -> Account Settings")
6. "Check for new messages at startup" is checked/enabled!!
However, this does only happen to the first account, that is created.

I cannot reproduce this problem anymore in Thunderbird 68.1.1. Both "Check for new messages at startup" and "Check for new messages every ... minutes" work reliably now.
