My login name is frb, my news server account name is fbelew, I can't set this since mailnews ASSUMES it is frb. Therefor I have no news access in mozilla. Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.2.17 i686; en-US; m18) Gecko/20001022
are you basing this off the prefs you see in the prefs.js file? we use the password manager for both the news username and password. do you get the dialogs for username & password?
> are you basing this off the prefs you see in the prefs.js file? I'm basing it off the prefs panel that I see after adding an account > we use the password manager for both the news username and password. > do you get the dialogs for username & password? Yes, but it was very very misleading to see the prefs panel say Username: frb when it will really ask later
Changing summary for clarity
Summary: mailnews preferences doesn't allow me to set username → don't show the wrong username in the account settings dialog.
accepting. since we use the password manager to keep track of the username, we should not show the account's username (from the prefs) in the ui. it is confusing. part of the problem is that we are setting the username on the account for news, and we don't need to. (this is a know bug.) adding nbaca to the cc list.

the fix is to hide the username stuff when viewing a news server.
fixed. now the username is not show for news servers. when I fix #14295, a user will be allowed to change usernames for imap and pop. but what about news usernames? there isn't always a single username for a news server, it can be different per group on a given server. there is an outstanding issue to add some ui to allow users to "forget" passwords from the account manager, instead of having to go into the password manager. when we add that ui, it will say "forget username and password" for news. that will allow a user to change the username, since they will have to enter it again the next time they do anything. I'll log a new bug to track that issue.
