Details
If I am working in a folder, cleaning up messages by deleting them, I am able to delete messages as I go by pressing the "delete" key, unless I come to a collapsed thread. If I am on a collapsed thread and the thread window itself is not the active one, the delete key does nothing.

Just tested again with:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8pre) Gecko/20100706 Lightning/1.0b2pre Lanikai/3.1.1pre
and this still fails the same way.
To reproduce, you need an email followed by an email thread in your folder. Click on the email and then click in the message window (so that the thread window loses focus), then use the delete key to try to delete the lone email and then delete the thread. Deleting the thread should silently fail.
Summary: "Delete" does not always work as expected → Keyboard "Delete" does not always work as expected

I believe this is a focus issue - the message/thread panes lose the focus, probably because of the deck switching that happens when we show the thread summary.
