I've tried changing the highlight, focus, cursor position, etc in the message compose window but nothing fixes it. If I close and re-open that same draft message the "Format" menu options return. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. type a message 2. save message as draft 3. attempt to access any option in "Format" menu Actual Results: Format menu items grayed out.

This WFM. Have you tried safe mode? (see https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode for more information) Anything in Tools -> Error console when this happens ?

Same effect in safe mode and no errors showing in log. One way this issue is "fixed" is if, after saving the message, I change the cursor focus from the body of the email message to the subject and back. This restores the "Format" and "Insert" menu functionality until the next message draft save.

Reporter do you still see this problem when using recent version of Thunderbird?
