why?
I prefer JSON to be readable in the browser. Anything consuming JSON should be able to deal with text JSON.

Sorry for reopening, but I disagree. If the standard says application/json, then you need to fix your browser[1], instead of using the wrong mime type :(

As far as I can tell, it is not a standard. http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4627.txt explicitly says it is not a standard. IANA has registered application/json as a valid type but that doesn't mean we have to use it.

And I think usability trumps a pseduostandard, especially one that will result in most of the people viewing it being immediately annoyed.
