Extended columns in the folder pane were removed in Thunderbird 3. There is an add-on that restores this functionality. You can also install this add-on using the Migration Assistant.
NEITHER OPTION WORKS. GET MSG THAT THIS ADD-ON IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH 3.1.1.
PLEASE BRING BACK THIS ASPECT MANY OF US LOVED IN VERSION 2.

That needs to be fixed by the author of that add-on.

Extra Folder Columns 0.4
AMO reports "Works with Thunderbird 3.0b1pre - 3.1.*"
but install needs maxver bump to 3.1.*
Also, there is also a comment about smart folders:
Great, but I found a bug :)
Great thing! I'd like to report one bug, though:
I'm using the unified inbox feature, and when I install extra folder columns on thunderbird 3.1, all my Inboxes are named "Inbox", which is quite confusing ... without e.c.f. installed, they are named after the account they belong to.

I don't know what's going on here. As comment #2 notes, I bumped the max-version to 3.1.* awhile back (June 3), so it should be compatible. Are you perhaps on the nightly update channel and not realizing it? I just went into AMO and bumped max-version again, now to 3.2a1 - maybe that will help? Otherwise this sounds like a bug external to the add-on.

RattyAway: jminta: bumping the version via the developer interface on AMO only works if the app is online like Firefox since the XPI on AMO itself isn't updated.
RattyAway: You need to push a new XPI to AMO
I've added Standard8 as an owner of the add-on, in case he has time to get to this before I do.

We have now released a new version of the add-on that updates the maximum version in install.rdf.
This is available here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/9716/
(This also resolves the unified/smart folder pane issues where the folder names were all the same).
