Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.7) Gecko/20100713 Thunderbird/3.1.1

Thunderbird 3.1.1 adds a space character to the beginning of all outgoing messages.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Send a message to yourself containing the text (between the quotes):

"test

test"

View message in "Sent" folder.

Actual Results:
Message appears with spurious leading space character before first character of first line, i.e.

" test

test"

Expected Results:
Message should appear as entered, i.e.

"test

test"
Further Actual Results:

As well as the message instance in the "Sent" folder containing the additional spurious space, the message as received in the Inbox also contains the additional spurious space character, i.e.

" test

test"

Further expected results:

The message as appearing in the Inbox should be as entered, and not contain an additional spurious space character, i.e.

"test

test"
Just run another test.

This time, immediately prior to sending the message, I did "select all" in the body pane and did "Insert HTML". This told me that the message's HTML stream was

"test<br>
<br>
test<br>"

i.e. there are apparently no spurious HTML tags which may render down into plain text as spaces.

Also, I have made a mistake in what text actually comes through. There are actually *two* spaces at the beginning of the message. For some reason the two spaces get collapsed down to one in the message preview pane and a messsage window. If I do "view source" I can see that there are actually two leading spaces.

Will (attempt to) change bug title.
Summary: Thunderbird 3.1.1 adds a space character to the beginning of all outgoing messages → Thunderbird 3.1.1 adds two spurious space characters to the beginning of all outgoing messages
Have tried downgrading, because I have used earlier versions of Thunderbird, and don't recall seeing this problem before.

I first noticed this problem on a clean install of Thunderbird 3.1.1.

Downgrading to Thunderbird 3.1, I still get the problem.

Downgrading to Thunderbird 3.0.6, the problem goes away.

I haven't tried going back up to Thunderbird 3.1, but on the face of it this problem appears to have appeared between Thunderbird 3.0.6 and Thunderbird 3.1.

My "About" box strings for 3.0.6 and 3.1 were:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.11) Gecko/20100711 Thunderbird/3.0.6

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100608 Thunderbird/3.1
Summary: Thunderbird 3.1.1 adds two spurious space characters to the beginning of all outgoing messages → Thunderbird 3.1 to 3.1.1 adds two spurious space characters to the beginning of all outgoing messages
