Whenever I want to close the Preferences window by pressing OK or the close
button, Mozilla crashes (standard Windows error box: "Mozilla has caused an
error in XPPREF32.DLL. Mozilla will now close."). This happens whether I have
changed a setting or not. This is a serious bug, since I am not able to change
any preferences. It did not happen in M18, but at least in the nightly builds of
25th and 27th of October.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Goto Edit/Preferences.
2.Press OK button
3.Crash...

Actual Results:  Standard windows error box: "Mozilla has caused an error in
XPPREF32.DLL. Mozilla will now close.".

Expected Results:  There should not be a crash... ;-)

Reporter, is it still bugged if you switch themes? Old preferences bugs were 
related to the themes. Btw, I was not able to reproduce the bug on win95 build 
20001027

Since I cannot change themes (it's in Preferences... D'OH), I cannot really test
this. But, however, I tried to create a new user profile (which used the classic
theme as a default), and the same error occured (which, I assume, means that the
error cannot be caused by corrupt user files).

I unpacked the ZIP file into a new directory; however, are there any system
files or registry entries that I should delete or replace in order to prevent
that any bugs are caused by older releases? I had M18 installed earlier, which
worked flawlessly, and then simply put the files from the nightly build into the
Mozilla directory.

you should delete your mozilla install directory, your mozregistry.dat file in
the windows directory and the mozilla folder which lives in application data
directory.  Then do a fresh install with the mozilla Installer and let us know
if htat helps things (note, you can change themes from the View menu.)

This helped. I think the files in the Application Data directory must have been
the problem, because I've deleted the Mozilla dir and the mozregistry files in
the Windows dir earlier without any help.

Anyway, it works now. What should I do with the bug status here?

mass verification of WorksForMe bugs: to find all bugspam pertaining to this,
set your search string to "IfItWorksForSlappyTheSquirrelThenItWFM".

if you think this particular bug is *still* an open issue, please make sure of
the following before reopening:

a. that it's still a problem with ***recent trunk builds*** on the all
appropriate platform[s]

b. provide clear steps to reproduce (unless a good test case is already in the
bug report), making sure it pertains to the original problem (avoid morphing as
much as possible :)
