clicking on message @top of a thread doesn't display message

In 2.0, if I clicked on a message at the top of a thread, it displayed the message at the top of the thread.  In 3.0, it displays nothing except a summary of the thread.

This is broken behavior.  

How can we fix or workaround 3.1's unhelpful and unproductive behavior?

this is mentioned in the release notes at "New Message Summary View" http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/3.0/releasenotes/ and also on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_3.0_-_New_Features_and_Changes

to return to v2 behavior, change the mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads setting in about:config to false
