This problem still exists in aurora 10.0a2 (2011-11-20).
A bug report was sent with id bp-174e0d98-bba5-4fe6-b0cc-d717f2111121

When firefox is started, an empty tab is available. When you then open a new tab or window (using either the file menu or a keyboard shortcut or the '+' icon for a new tab) firefox crashes. This does not happen anymore after you have visited a webpage.

I have not encountered this problem before though, only since this last update of aurora.
