User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152)
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.24 (20100228)

About half of the time when I need to insert a special character when composing e-mail I am finding that the menu "Insert | Characters and Symbols" does not work, i.e., when selected the "Insert Character" window does not open. When this happens I have to use the windows character map function.

Reproducible: Sometimes

I can not reliably reproduce this problem at this time but it appears to be more prevalent when I'm writing a reply to an e-mail as opposed to writing a new e-mail. What is more frustrating is that it seems to persist for a while and then "self correct", i.e. I encounter the problem but then later, without have restarted either Thunderbird or my computer, it will start working correctly.
Does in work in -safemode ? (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode)

2.0.24 is EOLed, you should consider moving to 3.1.x
Unfortunately 3.1.x does not support some very important add ons that we need, specifically XNote

Make sure to contact the addon author :-)

So does it work better when you start Tb in -safe-mode ?

Although XNote isn't available, another person has made available an extension based on the first, and this is compatible with 3.0 and 3.1: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/64758/

I've not tested either, so I can't comment on how good they are, but I would expect the new one is worth a try.
do you still see this problem?
