As you continue to type the message the UNDERLINE flags DISAPPEAR and you no longer know what is misspelled. You also cannot go back and correct the words by moving the cursor over the word any longer. In order to see what is misspelled you then have to start SPELL check manually. It worked until about two minor releases ago. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Misspell some words while writing a message 2.Continue to write, maybe misspelling a word every once in a while 3.Watch the underlined misspelled words - underline will dissappear

Anything in Tools -> Error console ? Does it work better if thunderbird is started in safemode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ?
No. Safe mode makes no difference. I have sent an email draft that will duplicate the failure.
(In reply to comment #2) > No. Safe mode makes no difference. > I have sent an email draft that will duplicate the failure. Thanks. Doing what you said in the email doesn't show me the issue.
please add your comments here or they will be ignored - I can't afford to do everything by personal email. I'll ignores the personnal emails you send me until the information shows here.
It appears that you have to add some text for at least two lines to the attachment for it to fail. If you just start typing a couple of lines with misspelled words then ENTER in the middle of a line the underlines will disappear for the last lines but the ones that were in the attachment stay. Also if the LAST WORD in the line is misspelled and underlined if you add a SPACE to the line before you press ENTER the underline goes away. If a word DROPS its underline you can go back and backspace over or delete a letter and reenter the incorrect letter and it will again underline.
There seems to be MANY quirks with reference to SPELL CHECK. The underlining on misspelled words seems to come and go. I cannot believe I am the only one that has a problem and I don't think I am the only one who misspells words. There are too many ways I see this happen so I will -ASSUME- someone else will see them also and it will get corrected.
I can confirm this annoying problem. Currently with Thunderbird 3.1.4, but I remember this in early 3.x versions too, and tested in Windows Vista 32, and Windows 7 64. The behavior seems to be aleatory, because I can't always reproduce it with the same steps, but occurs quite frequently. But, for me, cycling the "Spell check as you type" option make the red underlines show up again. Never experienced this problem in 2.x versions
does this happen with newer spell check in trunk build? ANd is it platform specific (seems unlikely)

I have the newest release. THIS problem is STILL there. RE:Comment 5 on 2010-08-16 15:04:59 PDT "... if the LAST..."CHANGE that to ANY"...WORD in the line is misspelled and underlined if you add a SPACE to the line before you press ENTER the underline ..."CHANGE that to ALL UNDERLINES"...goes away. If a word DROPS its underline you can go back and backspace over or delete a letter and reenter the incorrect letter and it will again underline."
It took several tries to duplicate the issue, but I did under the latest release on OS X 10.4.11 PowerMac. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101207 Thunderbird/3.1.7 - Build ID: 20101207114001 I had mistyped "additional" on the second line, corrected it, then backspaced over it quickly to erase the "l" (which was the original error) and continued typing. FYI, I type at over 100 wpm, in case speed is an issue. "additiona" stopped being flagged. I corrected it, removed the trailing "l" again, and continued typing until the end of the paragraph, then hit ENTER twice. The flagging disappeared. I suggest typing the text in, rather than copying & pasting. This appears to be a random condition, but I have verified cross-platform.
Don't think speed will be an issue as I type v-e-r-y s-l-o-w... Copy & paste seems to fail also if you go into the text and change spelling.
ludo, should this kick to spellcheck?

Can you try to reproduce this on Firefox 9.0?
duplicate of bug 514646?
Unclear description, most likely fixed by bug 1100966 or bug 1154791. Closing bug. Note: We have reproducible problems in spellchecking related to copy/paste and undo, see bug 336719.
