scc, you have a Mac-only string test harness that tests most of the features of
the new string APIs (nsAReadableString and friends). We should make it a
priority to get your harness compiling cross-platform. As it stands, people end
up stumbling into build bustage that "one string feature at a time". Getting the
harness running should flush out *all* these issues in one fell swoop. People
should not be afraid to use the new APIs for fear of introducing build bustage! :-)
cc'ing dprice, who's working on test harness stuff...
dprice, my understanding is this works now, thanks to you. Is this correct?

close to finishing it on Linux. I'll post the final diff to this bug.
milestone -> future, but it should land if its ready...
if someone can tell me that the string code breaks often
then we would move the milestone up.
