Already handed the Mac in question to Sean, tracking here. The screen on the MBP I borrowed went black randomly and now stays off even through restarts. You can hear it booting and I was able to get my stuff from disk through FireWire.

Called apple today and a shipping box will be sent.

The machine was sent out to apple yesterday and will have a recovery time of up to 5 business days.
Received back from apple and has been re-imaged.
