Crash Data

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.4; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 Firefox crashes unexpectedly, often upon opening a new page. What page it is does not seem to be consistent. Previously available Mozilla support help suggested deleting the file urlclassifier3.sqlite, but this did not seem to help in any way. Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: Seems to happen without rhyme or reason. ID 293163c3-a133-4b73-8ac5-5f4162100811 Crash Reason is listed as "EXC_BAD_ACCESS / KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE" Possibly a duplicate of bug 523405, but being a total newbie and ignorant of most computer lingo, I'm not sure how to actually resolve the problem on my computer.

That stack is odd in that it just ends. Do you have other crashes that have longer stacks by chance?
OK, so it looks like something is really trashing your stack. Do you have any add-ons installed? Also would be interested in what plugins you have installed.
No extensions, using the default theme, and here are the plugins: - Default Plugin 2.0 (Gecko default plugin) - DivX Web Player 2.0 (version 2.0.2.39) - Flip4Mac Window Media Plugin 2.2 (version 2.2.0.49) - iPhotoPhotocast 6.0 - Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.7.2 (MRJ Plugin version 1.0-JEP-0.9.7.2) - QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.4 - Shockwave Flash 10.1.53.64 (version 10.1 r53) - Silverlight Plug-in 3.0.50106.0 (this one is disabled) Haven't tried a re-install or run any anti-virus program. Firefox seems to be the only program affected. Let me know if you need more info, and thanks again for the help.
Your quick time version is out of date (I think). Could you try updating that? At least one of your crash stacks fingers quick time. You clearly have some form of stack corruption going on here, so I'm trying to figure out what. Is there a particular site that this seems to happen on, or does it not matter?
I'll definitely update QT and see if that does anything. As for sites, it happens on all sorts of sites (NYT, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.), usually when I switch pages or open a bookmarked page. Last night it even happened when I wasn't doing anything and had the browser open to this page! Thanks again for your help...

If not...I'll have to do more thinking on this.
I tried to update QT, but the version I have (7.6.4) is the highest version supported by my OS (OS X 10.4.11)--it wouldn't let me install any newer version. I re-loaded QT 7.6.4 anyway to see if it was just corrupted somehow... I also updated Flash to see if that does any good. I'll let you know if this helps any.
Can you go to about:support and click the copy to clipboard button and paste it here please?

Well, I'm at a complete loss here, so we are going to try a few other thing. Can you move your urlclassifier#.sqlite files out of the profile directory and let them rebuild and see if that fixes things?
I have tried deleting the file "urlclassifier3.sqlite" many times without any change in the crashing behavior, if that's what you mean by moving it out of the profile directory. Would it be a good idea to simply try installing the Firefox version 4 beta and see if it persists? Of course, I realize that as a beta version, it may have other bugs, and that might confuse matters.

Curses. That would have the same end-result. > Would it be a good idea to simply try installing the Firefox version 4 beta and > see if it persists? Of course, I realize that as a beta version, it may have > other bugs, and that might confuse matters. You could certainly try it. Still unclear as to why you keep getting stack corruption, but upgrading may help. FWIW, I use nightlies for my daily browsing and it's pretty much OK too. Occasionally you'll have a bad build, but betas are going to be more stable.
Any new ideas for this? It's still happening, and due to my apparently obsolete OS X 10.4.11, I can't even upgrade to FF 4.0b or even become a turncoat and use Chrome.

regarding Bug 581992 mentioned in comment 1 - one Thunderbird reporter resolved issue by deleting Thunderbird's message index file global-messages-db.sqlite. Like the other Thunderbird db corruptions, it is not assumed that the problem won't come back (Hopefully this will be fixed in sqlite 3.7.4.) Assuming the problem is related to urlclassifier3.sqlite is there no way to track what is going into and out of the db?
