I am posting this using the Oct. 2 nightly build, which is the last version that worked on this machine. (I include the released version of M18 in this statement.) Ever since then, new builds have all had the same problem, where they hang during startup. The splash screen appears, and the hard drive does a lot of crunching, and after a while the hard drive crunching gradually dies down until it stops. Then there's no more progress, even if I give it ten minutes or an hour to finish. The splash screen will promptly redraw itself if you cover it with another window and then uncover itself, so it isn't completely out in la-la land, but just stuck somehow. Is there some incompatibility with earlier builds, like the problem some months back where we had to erase old versions of Mozilla? Hopefully I learn how to fix this soon, as this build will expire shortly...
please remove any old installs of Mozilla including your old profiles (found in a Users50 directory either one level above the install directory or in your winnt/profiles/user/application data/mozilla) and your mozregistry.dat file in your winnt dir. After that download and install a current nightly trunk build and report back.
Worked like a charm! The latest build is running like a top. Thanks for telling me all the places to look for files; I wouldn't have found them all.
