Can you try to start Thunderbird in safe-mode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ? Are you behind a proxy (trying to figure out why you can't send repports) ?

Why can't you start in safe-mode ?

We'll need a stack trace. Could you follow the instructions at https://developer.mozilla.org/en/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_WinDbg replacing firefox by thunderbird and post you results here please ?
