User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100802 Lightning/1.0b2 Thunderbird/3.1.2

When email is first viewed in the preview pane, the option to show remote content is presented. Upon pressing the show remote content button, it appears that thunderbird is trying to download the images, however, each image placeholder does not load the image, rather the broken image icon in the upper left of the placeholder is shown. I was able to view images without issue prior to upgrading to 3.1.2 of Thunderbird.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select any new email
2. Select show remote content
3.
Actual Results:
Upon pressing the show remote content, the image placeholders all populated with broken image icons.

Expected Results:
Upon pressing the show remote content, the image placeholders should populate with the actual image, not the broken image icon.
can you share an email with us that behaves that way ?

Are the images link visible in Firefox ?

Anything in Tools -> Error console when you have the issue ?
The first screen shot from bath and body works is of an email that I selected the option to always show remote content from.

The second screen shot is of an email in which I merely clicked on the email to view without having yet pressed the show remote content button

Could you try if this happens also when start TB in safe-mode (see how-to start TB in safe mode http://support.mozillamessaging.com/bg/kb/Safe+Mode )

Tried to pull up an html email in Thunderbird safe-mode and get the same issue as before. All images placeholders are shown with a broken image icon. I am running Norton Suite: Product Name: Norton Security SuiteVersion: 3.8.0.41Serial Number: 123Media SKU: 20901033Current SKU: 20901033Family SKU: 0000000End Point ID: {e2d9a089-0631-11df-a12a-001aa08d0030}.

The suite has not changed since the upgrade to the latest version of Thunderbird. Looking at the community support forums, it appears that I am not the only user having this same issue.
As in my previous comment #4, I don't see your issue then it's most probably Thunderbird unrelated.

Do you use a firewall or Antivirus with web-engine? If your answer is "yes" could you try if disabling them this issue is still here?
I went ahead and reverted back to Thunderbird version 2.0.0.24 (20100228) all is working as it should with no issues with images loading in email messages. I didn't have to change any system settings or do anything with my anti-virus or firewall. This is proof that there must be something wrong with the newest version of Thunderbird.
Ciao Kevin.
I see from you screenshot attached here that the sender of your testcase is in your address book: maybe for this do you have uncheck the option "allow remote content" ?
when i open the test email i.e. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=468326 (after renaming it to "email issue.eml") the images are broken and there is no "show remote content" button , this is on Thunderbird 3.1.4 Mac OS X 10.6.4
i see the broken images in TB safe mode on both TB 3.1.4 Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6.4 as you can see in this attachment!

Roland, I think what you are seeing is actually bug 529735.

I've tried loading this message into a message folder, and I get the show remote content bar, and when I click the button it loads in the images.

This leaves me puzzled, Thunderbird is obviously not in offline mode - the screenshots show that it isn't. Safe mode doesn't seem to fix the issue.

It makes me think that we can't get the message header for some weird reason, maybe corruption of the database? The only other possibility could be something bad in the address book, but that's less likely when hitting the show remote content button.

Mark you are right! I did indeed reproduce bug 529735 and not this bug, 589402.

I removed the ".eml" filetype and moved it to the Mail folder of my POP account and voila "View Remote Images" works!
 i.e. I reproduced this bug, i.e. bug 589402
oops instead of "i.e. I reproduced this bug, i.e. bug 589402"
I meant:
"i.e. I CANNOT reproduce this bug, i.e. bug 589402"
Here's hoping somebody finds steps to reproduce for this bug, bug 589402

Joe, can you help sort this out?
Tested the testcase (as a mail folder) with esr 10.0.6 and the remote image links were still good and worked fine for me. The only thing that I can figure for the original problem is that there might have been redirects involved. Remote content does not work if there is redirect involved.
I'm not aware of any problem with remote images on more current builds.
Lets just mark this WFM
