Users updating to Personas Plus 1.6 who have the Google Toolbar installed are getting some stalls on startup and on loading the extension manager. (bug 590608) There are reports of problems with Google Toolbar, Forecastfox, Tab Mix Plus, Firebug, Flagfox, and some themes. (see bug 590608 and the Personas Plus reviews) I don't know whether the fault is in Personas Plus or Google Toolbar, but for now I think it'd be a good idea to stop letting users update to Personas Plus 1.6 to avoid new users with problems. The previous version of Personas Plus 1.5.3 seems to not have these new problems.

I have heard rumors that Personas Plus is also among the worst offenders of impacting Firefox start-up time.

That doesn't relate to the current issues we're seeing with 1.6.

Yeah, we should blocklist version 1.6 until we have a fix.

The error is similar to one I was getting rare reports of in the past. It probably has a similar cause, but I still don't know what it is.
Once I learned how to reproduce the problem, I posted this:

Hopefully users are finding that ok and fixing the problem.

I'm seeing the front Personas Plus details page showing version 1.6 but with the unreviewed styling. Older versions are still public looking. What's going on?

I just tried installing 1.5.3 and attempting to update to 1.6. It still does.

New profile in Firefox 3.6.8 on Linux; load the page:

and I see it showing 1.6 as unreviewed. Refresh once and it shows 1.5.3 instead. If I try the same in 4.0b4 it always shows 1.5.3. AMO caching seems to be confused. If it doesn't clear up in a few hours I'll file a new bug for that.

In any case, I retested updating and 1.5.3 won't offer to update to 1.6 anymore. Closing as FIXED then. Please reopen if anyone else can still update to 1.6.
