591915 - Impossible to uncheck Thunderbird as default e-mail client

When starting Thunderbird, It always askes if I want to use it as default mail client.
It is impossible to uncheck it.
Thunderbird > Preferences > Advanced > General > alway check at start up if Thunderbird is the default client is unchecked.

Anything in Tools -> Error console ?

Do you get the same issue if you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ?

This is WFM, TB is my default client - I unset the preference and restarted, the pref was still unchecked with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; rv:2.0b5pre) Gecko/20100831 Thunderbird/3.2a1pre.

No it isn't, the default is SeaMonkey.

But when you started thunderbird in safe-mode did you try to remove the option ? and restart after that ?

My English is not good enough :(

By removing to option, do you mean uncheck "use tb is default client for e-mail"?
If that is what you mean, it is impossible to do that, both in normal mode and safe mode.

The nl means "Nederlands", translated "Dutch".

open /Application/Utilities terminal

type ls -l and then drag and drop prefs.js on the termnial window.

I live in Den haag :D

Well starting thunderbird in safe-mode deactivates them and you still had the issue.

One other thing you could do is repair permissions on your machine using /Application/Utilities/DiskUtilities (that's  a nice grapical program).

I tried the ls -l again.

It seems I didn't use the space after -l before.

How would repair permissions help?
I am the only user of this pc.

How, exactly, did you "unset the preference" ?  My experience has always been that once TB is the "default" client for a service, the option becomes unselectable (i.e., is "greyed out"); that is, it is impossible to "uncheck" TB as the default client (for any service).  See Bug 360809.

A really late answer, but I had no choice.
About 6 months ago, my MacBook crashed.
To be more precisely, the motherboard crashed.
Now after 6 months, I have a new one.
Everything was simply copied from the hard disc of the other MacBook (with the crashed motherboard) to the new one.
When I first started Thunderbird on this MacBook, I could change the settings very easaly.
I have no idea at all if the motherboard caused that problem, but now it is gone.
No new profile, no new install, only an exact copy.
