I keep typing 'Add on' into my location bar and expect about:addons to autocomplete. But it doesn't. This is a minor polish issue but I really wish we allowed this URI into the autocomplete results.

No about: URIs are allowed in autocomplete currently. This would thus be a duplicate of bug 417965 unless it was special-cased. Bug 462674 is the better route here, whereby it would essentially know all about: URIs automatically.

You can use autocomplete on an about: URI just fine if you bookmark it, though.
OS: Windows 7 → All
Hardware: x86 → All
Version: unspecified → Trunk
Bug 462674 wouldn't fix your use case however. Limi's argument in bug 417965 is basically that this use case shouldn't be taken into account unless you explicitly star about:addons. (though personally, I'd like both bugs fixed)
I think it might be a reasonable argument to whitelist a few about: URIs to allow autocomplete to handle them without a bookmark, namely about:addons, about:support, about:home, & about:about. But then we'd have inconsistent behavior with respect to other about: URIs.

we autofill about pages, but one must type "about:" before it kicks in... Additionally there's various shortcuts and menus around pointing to the same page, and I've not seen many requests to provide quicker access to specific pages in the Address Bar... Thus let's move back to inactive until feedback tells us users need it.
