Details
The storage of local mail files (optionally) be encrypted. The password used could be retrieved when the user chooses their profile at login, as they would do for an LDAP configuration retrieval. In situations I administer, we cannot use Netscape/Mozilla Mail, even with IMAP, for even semi-sensitive E-mail because the messages are stored insecurely on shared drives once downloaded. PS, ditto for cookies.

Reassigning to Browser:Single Signon. Maybe not the right component, but it's related.

Why do I get the feeling I made it a back-end issue in the first place?

The reason a number of my clients continue to use Groupwise or Outlook is because they allow the user to have their E-mail not be stored on the local computer at all, and not accessible without a password. At the very least, it should be an option to not store IMAP folders & messages between sessions. At best, IMAP folders should be 'cached' as they currently are but protected (encrypted) by a password, should the user select that option ([x] Encrypt local E-mail storage, [x] Remember password).

I'm not planning on working on this, so assigning to nobody@mozilla.org I am hoping to make the backend mail store plugable, and then someone could provide an encrytped store, if they wanted.
