Details
Some ISPs do not have a mail pool, but separate their customer's mail on different servers, and the customer needs to know and specify the exact server that the mail is on. This defies the purpose of autoconfig and makes account setup a chore for users, and in practice an unsurmountable stumbling block for normal users. They will resort to another email client (like Webmail), which is a discrimination of Thunderbird.

Similar problems appear when the user needs to enter a certain username that has no resemblance with the email address, but that can be solved (arkwardly) with bug 564043 (custom fields). An autoconfig server would be *much* nicer for these cases as well, so that users don't have to look up usernames.
