when reached 1200 messages, says inbox is full and advise to delete old messages and compact the folder, which I both did. Error message though still appears even after a restart. So I can't download new messages from my mailbox anymore

Reproducible: Always

using Walnut screen for 4 years with column display. French version !
By the way, a bad thing with version 3.1 is you can't adjust the size of the columns as wanted which was possible with the prvious version.
Also, in that configuration, the head columns of the messages list and the message itself go one onto the other...
There is a 4GB limit for mailfiles. Do you hit that ?

Do you tried to move for example half of the mails to a subdirectory and starting a file/compact folders ?

The mail inbox file is located in your profile :
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Finding_your_profile
somewhere under a "mail" sub directory and it's a file without extension.
